Jordan's protected areas are managed largely by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), founded in 1966 to protect wildlife and reintroduce endangered species. The first reserve, Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, opened in 1975, followed by the Ajloun Forest Reserve (1988), Azraq Wetland Reserve (1978), and the two that anchor the birdwatching circuit: Dana Biosphere Reserve (1993) and Mujib Nature Reserve.
Later additions include the Dibeen Forest Reserve (2004), Fifa (2011), and the Burqu, Dahek and Dmeitha reserves (2018). These areas protect eagles, vultures, hyenas, ibex and some of the Middle East's richest bird life.
