Qasr al-Azraq

Qasr al-Azraq: the black-basalt desert castle used by Lawrence of Arabia.

Qasr al-Azraq is a black-basalt Roman and Umayyad fortress beside the Azraq oasis, famously used as T.E. Lawrence's headquarters in the winter of 1917 — its gateway stone still bears the pivot marks.

It is an easy stop on the eastern loop. Travellers who hire car & driver in Jordan pair it with the wetlands, and full package tours to Jordan include it on desert-castle days.
